In recent years, several urban US airports haveconverted some of the unused land past theirrunways to provide habitats for honeybees. Whileairports may seem unlikely locations forbeekeeping, many of them, in fact, have thepotential to offer ideal conditions for an apiary (agroup of beehives). The Lambert-St. Louis International Airport, for instance, hosts an apiaryon a 400-square-foot area of land just north of one of its runways. This area is rich in Dutchclover, a preferred food source for honeybees. The honeybees may thrive there in partbecause they aren't exposed to the agricultural pesticides suspected of contributingto Colony Collapse Disorder. Though unorthodox, airport-based honeybee habitats can helpto ensure that local regions have healthy populations of honeybees.
